Building an email list was not on my list of priorities when I first started my blog, but now it’s actually one of my favorite things about my blog!
I honestly wish I was more serious about starting my list earlier in the game. Every blogger out there that wants to turn their blog into a business needs an email list. It’s one of the best ways to get readers to your blog in the first place.
Email is one of the most direct ways to reach people. When you build an email list with this in mind you can create personal, intentional messages for your readers.
And that’s how you can build a community and loyal audience for your blog. And if you’re serious about making money from your blog, then you might have heard the saying before “there’s money in the list.” The #1 way to make money and sell your product or promote affiliate links is directly through your email list!
So if you don’t have an email list, I highly recommend you get on it today and start building one ASAP.
I question I often see about email list building is “what email management tool should I use?”
I had this same exact question too. But as a new blogger, I couldn’t afford to dish out money every month especially if I wasn’t even sure if anyone would be reading my emails in the first place.
I did a ton of research — I knew a lot of bloggers were using MailChimp or ConvertKit, but at the time MailChimp didn’t have automation tools at the time and CK was out of my budget.
So I decided to set up my list with MailerLite... and I couldn’t be happier!
Why I Love MailerLite
1 | It’s so easy to use
MailerLite is awesome because it’s so simple. You don’t need to be a pro designer or know how to code to set up your list. Just sign up for an account and start creating opt-in forms.
MailerLite has a ton of amazing templates where you can easily just drag and drop things into place or arrange them how you like.
There are design options for everyone. MailerLite lets you choose if you want to use Drag and Drop, HTML, or the Rich Text editor to send your emails. So if you want to mess around with coding, you can. Or you can just click a template and call it a day.
That’s one of the amazing parts of the platform — you can do anything you want with it and customize your emails and forms as little or as much as you like!
I personally use the Rich Text editor because they look like plain emails to a friend. I’ve learned that adding too many bells and whistles to your newsletters can quickly have your email end up in spam.
2 | It’s Forever Free up to 1,000 subscribers
Alright, everybody loves free stuff… right?! I know I do. So one of the main things that caught my eye about MailerLite was the fact that it’s Forever Free up to 1,000 subscribers.
When you’re a new blogger, this is great! After that, MailerLite has different monthly prices depending on how many email subscribers you have on your list.
You can also upgrade your level based on how many subscribers you have & get some extra bonus features. Even if you end up passing 1,000 subscribers, MailerLite is more affordable than other email marketing tools.
3 | Automation
I don’t know what I would do without automation, for real. Like can you even have a proper email list without it?! You can set up emails to automatically be sent out to your subscribers when they join your list, sign up for a freebie, click on certain links, etc.
The automation tool can be used to personalize your list and get into people’s inboxes quickly. You can’t be around all day waiting for people to sign up so that you can send them an email manually.
Sure it sounds easy if you are just starting your list, but once it starts gaining momentum and multiple people are signing up throughout the day, it’s gonna be hard to keep up with it. So that’s where automation comes in.
You can even set up if you want your welcome email to land in your new subscriber’s inbox instantly or after a couple of hours, etc. It’s been such a time-saver for me.
You can even use automation to set up email courses! Sounds pretty good to me.
4 | The Auto Resend feature
Okay, I actually didn’t even know about this feature until recently. When you send out emails, you can set up something called Auto Resend which will automatically resend the email to anyone who didn’t open it within the timeframe you specify.
You can choose to resend it in a few days, weeks, whatever you want and you can choose to send the exact same email with a different subject or you can choose to change up the email and the subject as well.
It’s pretty cool and leads to higher open rates & gives your readers another chance to read your email. Sometimes people are subscribed to so many other websites, your email might escape their inbox or even land in the junk mail folder. So the Auto Resend feature can be really helpful for getting your subscribers to read your emails.

Some features originally available on the free plan have been removed but I believe you do not need them if you’re still freshly starting out your email list. How To Get Started on MailerLite
It’s super simple getting started. First, you’ll want to actually sign up for the platform. You’ll start off by entering the company or organization name, your email that you’ll be sending your newsletters from (it has to be an email associated with your website domain), and a password. And yep, no credit card required!

Get your account approved
- Fill out your profile
Next, MailerLite has to approve your account to make sure you’re not going to be sending out mass spammy emails. So first you’ll have to complete your profile with all your information such as name, email, address, etc. It will also give you an option to upload a profile picture.
You’ll also need to agree to their anti-spam policy!
- Verify your website
The second step to getting approved is verifying your website domain. You need to verify that you have a paid domain name and you own it.
MailerLite will not accept free domains like free WordPress blogs because then your emails will have a higher chance of ending up in spam folders and we don’t want that!
Like I mentioned before, your email on file has to have the same domain as your website. It can’t be a Gmail or Yahoo account because it will end up in spam folders that way. Once you input that information, you’ll receive an email from MailerLite with a confirmation link.
And that’s how you set up the account! Once your account is created, you’re ready to log in and start browsing the platform. Here are some things you need to know about navigating the MailerLite dashboard.
Navigating the MailerLite Dashboard
When you log into MailerLite, there are a few things that you’ll see on the first page. This is called your Dashboard. You’ll be able to see how many subscribers you have, what plan you have, plus stats, automation, and all that good stuff.
There are 4 other links on the top menu that you need to know about.
Campaigns are what your emails are called. There are several types of campaigns you can send your subscribers
- Regular campaign — This is just a regular email newsletter
- A/B Split campaign — This is when you send two different emails out so that you can test which kind of email performs better than the other
- Auto Resend — Auto Resend automatically sends out your newsletter again to the subscribers who didn’t read it the first time
- RSS campaign — This one sends out a newsletter every time you publish a new post on your blog
Depending on your needs you can decide what kind of newsletter you want to send out. My favs are regular campaigns & auto resend!
Under the Subscribers tab, you’ll see a list of all your subscribers. You’ll also see a section from groups and segments. You can split up your subscribers into groups or go even further and segment your list.
Segments are lists that can be super detailed. You can filter your subscribers based on certain behaviors, things they’ve clicked on, what groups they belong to, how they signed up for your newsletter, timezone, etc.
All these things can help you send even more personalized and targeted email newsletters which are great for converting subscribers into customers.
The Forms tab is pretty obvious. Here are where all your opt-in forms and landing pages live. You can create little forms to embed into pages, you can make pop-ups, or you can create full-length pages dedicated to getting people to sign up for your email list.
All your forms will be kept in this tab and you’ll have access to stats on this page. You’ll also be able to delete and edit forms from this section.
Last but not least: Automation! You’ll see all your automated emails in this section with stats like open rates and click rates.
It’s one of the best ways to grow your email list on autopilot and spend more time on other blogging tasks that might require more of your attention. Seriously consider using automation and take advantage of this free tool that MailerLite offers.
