First impressions are everything. That’s why I love having a static homepage on my website instead of just my recent content! Even if your business is primarily a blog, having a static homepage can showcase exactly who you are, what you do, your best blog posts, freebies, and more.

If you’re wondering what the heck a static homepage is, it’s simply a set “front page” for your blog that people land on when they visit your site as opposed to your recent blog posts.

In this post, I’m going to go over the benefits and show you how to make a static homepage in WordPress.

Benefits of The Static Homepage

With a static homepage on your website, you can…

#1 Introduce yourself & talk about what you do

First, like I mentioned before – first impressions are everything. From the minute someone lands on your homepage, you have the opportunity to share a bit about who you are, what you do, and who you do it for.

Your website visitors will instantly know if you’re right for them and whether or not they want to work with you, read your content, subscribe, and more.

#2 Have better control of your reader’s journey

This is huge.

Your most recent blog post at the top of your site can shape a person’s opinion and first impression of you when they visit your blog. And if you’re a consistent content creator, you’ll have new posts up on your blog pretty frequently. Each person’s perception of your site and who you are will be different based on whatever posts they happen to see first.

With a static homepage, you have way more control of the narrative and can help your reader along their journey. Want them to read a specific post? Or maybe you want them to follow you on social media?

These are things that you can highlight on your static homepage… which brings me to #3!

#3 Showcase your signature lead magnet

Your static homepage is the perfect place to highlight and showcase your signature lead magnet.

You can capture someone’s attention right off the bat and encourage them to join your email list by showing off your freebies coupled with a powerful call-to-action.

Getting the right kind of people on your email list is essential when it comes to running your business. Plus this is an excellent way to get them familiarized with your paid offerings and services as well.

How To Make A Static Homepage In WordPress

Now you know you’re ready for a static homepage on your site. But how do you actually go about creating one and making sure it’s effective?

First, let’s talk about the anatomy of a high-converting homepage.

The Anatomy of a High-Converting Homepage

Here are some key things your homepage should have:

  • On brand design & functionality
  • Optimized copy
  • Powerful call-to-actions
  • The ability to capture someone’s attention above the fold
  • A strategic and simple navigation menu

Your website should be clear and on-brand for your business. It should be easy to navigate and be aesthetically pleasing. You DO NOT want it looking cluttered and crazy. It’s important to also have optimized copy with a purpose. The way you write on your homepage can make or break your website.

Be sure to be concise & crystal clear about who your business is for, what you do, and what readers can expect to find on your site. If it’s not clear, it’ll end up giving you more trouble because you may start attracting the wrong audience.

Call-to-actions are exactly what they sound like. Your homepage should call people to take a specific action. And ideally, you want to capture their attention to encourage them to take action above the fold of your website. What “above the fold” means is the part of your site they instantly land on and see without having to scroll down.

Lastly, be strategic with your navigation menu and don’t overthink it. Keep it simple. Too many choices can be confusing for people and they may not end up taking action at all or browsing your blog. Less is more in this case.

My Favorite Tools To Build My Homepage

Elementor & Elementor Pro

I absolutely LOVE the Elementor Proย WordPress plugin to build my homepage and all of my landing pages.

This plugin allows you to build beautiful pages without having to know any code whatsoever. I personally use the Pro version because I love the extra features that it offers. With that being said, the free Elementor plugin is more than enough to build your static homepage. Beaver Builder is also another great alternative.

Bluchic Themes & Templates

I don’t think I could’ve built a nearly as beautiful and effective homepage without the help of Bluchic. Seriously, I rave about them all the time. They’re amazing.

My WordPress theme is the ChicServe theme created by them. This theme is entirely customizable with the Elementor plugin so I was able to drag and drop everything on the template to design my homepage exactly how I wanted it to look.

I also use their landing page templates to build all my pages for my freebies, sales pages, and so much more.

Setting Up The Static Homepage

#1 To make a static homepage in WordPress, the first thing you need to do is create a new page on WordPress.

#2 I like to remove the sidebar and basically start with a clean slate. You can do this by going to the Post Attributes and changing the template “Elementor Canvas”

#3 I then save the page and then open it back up and click “Edit with Elementor” Now it’s time to start building your page exactly how you like! You should be able to keep your navigation menu at the top with this template setting.

#4 The last step is to set this new page as your homepage. Go to Settings โ†’ Reading. Here you can set your homepage to a static page and select the one you just created.

Now you’re all done and your static homepage is ready to roll!

Final Thoughts

All in all, I think static homepages are incredible and THE way to go! I love having full control over how my site looks when someone lands on the page. With the right type of homepage set up, you can easily grow your email list, land new clients, and so much more.

It is totally worth it! While static homepages are not for everyone – I encourage you to give it a try and see how it goes. It may end up helping your business more than you thought!
