It is not an understatement when I say that blogging changed my life.
It really changed my life in ways I never could’ve ever dreamed.
I created my blog two years ago as a hobby. But boy, I so afraid to start a blog. So afraid of putting myself out there and I was terrified at the thought of people I knew IRL finding my blog.
I knew I wanted to start a blog. I knew I wanted to have a creative outlet for what I liked to do. But I just had this huge fear of people seeing my blog. So I’d hide it — from my friends, family, and even my partner (looking back at this, I can’t believe I did that!)
Hiding my blog was something I became obsessed with and I felt like it really held me back from sharing things on it.
I was straight up scared to open up and put myself out there on the internet for the world to see.
And to be completely honest, it’s something I still struggle with every once in a while.
*cue that cringey feeling when my blog gets brought up at the family Christmas party*
But I conquered my fear and started my freakin’ blog! I am no longer scared of putting my thoughts out there for the world to see.
I had the idea of a blog floating around for a while before pulling the trigger and now I wish I had started earlier. Now I’m a full-time business owner & entrepreneur — something I never saw possible especially from a blog.
But wow. It’s something so eye-opening and transformative. I couldn’t be sitting here writing this and working on this as my real job if I hadn’t started my beauty blog in 2016.
Why you should start a blog
Blogging is such an incredible experience. It’s a creative outlet and a great to let out steam. Whether you’re interested in pursuing it professionally or just as a hobby, there’s a corner of the blogging universe for everyone.
You can blog about what your heart desires. Blogging is an amazing way to improve your writing & storytelling skills. You get SO much out of writing a blog and I truly think everyone should start a blog at least once in their life.
It’s an awesome way to meet new people around the world on the internet and make new friends. And not only that, but it helps you become a more confident person overall. There are so many good things that come from being a blogger — that come from putting your thoughts and feelings into words, sort of like a personal journal.
It helps you build a new mindset around writing and the way you live your life. At least, I definitely think so!
But more often than not, we have a fear of doing something new. We have many fears about diving in headfirst with a new hobby like blogging. And with that comes the excuses and that’s how we end up not doing something.
Because we let fear consume us.
Well, no. Not this time. If you know deep down inside that you would love to have a blog but fear is holding you back, it’s time to let those go.
It’s time to overcome those fears and see just how irrational they actually are. I’ve learned that even though you’re afraid of something, the best way to overcome is to just do it.
Fear #1: Too many people blog about what I want to blog about
You might be afraid to start a blog because you think too many people already write about what you want to write about. You think your niche is oversaturated.
While there can be many people online that write about that topic, remember that there’s only one of you. Only you can put your unique perspective and fresh ideas about a topic and be different.
You have your own voice.
There are so many websites, businesses, and blogs in the world that are in the same niche. And there are also a ton of people around the world reading these blogs. There is space for everyone to succeed and write on the internet.
The more unique & narrowed down your niche is, the better chance you will find your tribe.
But don’t think for a second you can’t start a blog because someone else writes about the same thing. Why you *need* to get over the fear and start a blog in 2020! Click To Tweet
Fear #2: But I’m not an expert & people will think I’m a fraud
You don’t need to be an expert to start a blog. If you want to blog about a certain topic, chances are you might know a bit more about it than some people out there.
A lot of the time we everyone knows about something we want to write about. But actually, that’s not true. Believe it or not, there are people out there that don’t know what you know.
Or maybe they do know how to do something, but you know how to do it in a more efficient & quicker manner.
Like I said before. You’re unique.
Use your experience & skills to share your knowledge with the world.
You don’t need to be a professional chef to write a food blog. You don’t need to be a licensed makeup artist to write a beauty blog. In reality, you don’t need any of these things. You just need to have personal experience with these things and be willing to share them with the world.
Fear #3: Nobody cares what I have to say
Stop right there! WHAT?!
You’d be surprised to find out that yes, people care what you have to say — even strangers.
Nowadays, people are constantly consuming content online. And sure, there might be crickets are first.
But keep working at it and don’t be afraid to promote your blog. If you keep moving forward and keep writing, the readers will come with time.
Focus on learning about using Pinterest for your blog and SEO and over time, you will start to see visitors.
Blogging is a long and tough journey. If no one is visiting your blog, think about it this way: it’s not that they don’t care what you have to say. It’s that they don’t know that you have things to say.
They don’t know about your blog so make it known and focus on getting your blog more visible online.
Fear #4: What if I get judged? What if I get haters?
Alright, this is a totally valid fear. I get it.
Nobody wants to get judged or receive hate comments from strangers online. It’s an absolutely terrible feeling.
I’ve had people tell me things or indirectly write negative things about the content on my blog. Not everyone is going to have the same opinions and they can disagree. That’s life.
You dust off your shoulders and move on. But disagreements & getting made fun of are two different things.
I’ve been blogging since 2016 and not once have I been made fun of. Constructive criticism, yes. Differing opinions, yes. But flat out haters and bullying? Nah, girl.
And while my experience can be 100% different from another blogger out there, what I mean to say is that most of the time those fears are in your head.
Yes, it’s possible to receive hate but how often does it really happen? People are coming to your blog to learn something from you. To get entertained. To get tips. And to see what knowledge or content you can offer them.
Most people are not going to judge you. If they don’t like something, they will usually just move on!
And if someone does tell you something rude, remember: that just reflects what kind of person they are. Not you.
It’s just a risk you have to be willing to take. Someone can easily tell you something nasty in the streets or even at your job (if you worked horrible customer service jobs like me.)
It’s just a part of life. Don’t let this fear hold you back.
Fear #5: What if people I know IRL & family find my blog?
Hey now. I had this same fear.
I’m an introvert. Maybe you are too.
So maybe you’re absolutely terrified at the thought of your friends and family knowing about your blog. I’m a pretty private person so while I loved blogging, I didn’t want to share everything. I only went by my first name and didn’t even show a picture of myself until I was already almost year into my blogging journey (INSANE RIGHT?!)
I decided to start opening up more and bit the bullet and posted a photo of my face. And I realized it wasn’t so bad after all.
My blog was discovered by friends and family by accident (thanks, Instagram notifications!) I was so upset and freaked out by it. That everyone discovered my little beauty blog I was posting on in secret.
I’m going to be totally honest with you. I still struggle with this fear. I hate the idea of IRL people knowing about my blog — especially since I shifted gears and changed my niche. But now that I do it full-time, I can’t hide it anymore and it’s something I’ve just come to terms with.
I discovered that actually other people in my life would love to have blogs too but we just never really talked about it before. Now there are many more bloggers in my life than when I first started so it wasn’t so bad after all that people found out about it.
Sometimes you just have to put yourself out there and learn to grow from it.
But look, everyone is different. You don’t need to show your face to have a blog. You don’t need to use your full name. The thing about starting a blog is that you don’t need to do anything you don’t want to do.
The key to stop letting fear creep up on you is to just stop caring about it! I have had all of these fears and I’ve definitely overcome them but sometimes they do end up coming back every once in a while.
Blogging is a beautiful thing and it’s freakin’ hard to do sometimes but if you love it enough, you have the power to conquer your fears and be confident.
I had no idea my blog would change my entire life so I can’t imagine if I had let these fears stop me. Where would I be today? I sure as hell wouldn’t be an entrepreneur!
So I encourage you to start that blog. Write. Share it with the world.
Keep your head up. Stay strong and focus on a positive mindset. You got this.
