Did you know you could actually make money passively every time someone joins your email list? Yep! It’s possible using a tripwire offer.
There are tons of ways to make money from your blog and turn it into a business. And this is by far one of my favorite ways to do it!
What is a tripwire offer?
First, let’s talk about what a tripwire actually is. It’s basically a super discounted offer (usually a digital product) that only gets offered once someone subscribes to your email list.
So once they see you promoting your opt-in and they decide “heck yea, I want that!” — they enter their email address and then they are automatically redirected to your tripwire offer.
It is a limited time offer that is only available to those that opt-in to that specific freebie on your website. Usually, the offer is extremely valuable and at a discounted price. The catch with tripwire offers is that the offer is time-sensitive and will disappear if the person does not act within a certain time frame.
The reason why tripwires are so popular is because:
- You can easily make money passively on autopilot every time someone joins your email list
- When someone purchases a valuable low-priced product from you, you build trust with them & they are more likely to purchase from you again in the future.
Even if you don’t make a sale on your tripwire every single time, you still got the email subscriber which you can later put through a sales funnel & sell another offer to them down the line.
Components of a high-converting tripwire
Now that I gave you a quick overview of tripwire offers, let’s get a little more in detail about each component of a high-converting tripwire. Then, we will go over how you can actually create one for your blog and make money with a tripwire!
A super valuable offer
So first of all, the tripwire offer needs to be something of value that can help your audience achieve a quick win. It has to be something they actually want and would benefit from. It’s gotta be irresistible and one way to do that is by making it a product that can’t be found anywhere else.
It’s very enticing when the tripwire offer is an only they can only get right now during this specific timeframe and if they miss out, they miss out!
The digital product that is going to be your tripwire offer doesn’t need to be something huge. It can be as simple as a short ebook, a template, spreadsheet, webinar, or set of graphics that is related to your opt-in freebie and would help your audience achieve something.
A steep discount
Now it’s time to create your actual tripwire offer. Don’t forget that it needs to be relevant to your opt-in freebie.
The next ingredient for powerful tripwires is a steep discount. Most tripwires are heavily discounted (we’re talking at least 50% off!)
This is part of what makes the tripwire so effective — the fact that they can purchase this highly valuable product at such a low price… it’s a no-brainer!
Let’s talk about pricing a bit more though. The most important thing when it comes to pricing your tripwire offer is to be honest. Think about what you would normally price the product if you were to sell it on your blog and then come up with the discounted price.
Don’t say your product is worth $47 and sell it for $7 just so it looks like a good deal. The product should *actually* be worth $47, if not you will lose your audience’s trust and they will see right through you.
The last component of a high-converting tripwire is time-sensitivity. Adding that sense of urgency is what helps people make the final decision to purchase.
Usually, the timeframe is anywhere between 10-30 minutes. After the time is up, they lose their chance to purchase the tripwire offer at the discounted price.
This helps push them towards the purchase because of FOMO, right?!
How to create tripwires
The actual process of creating a tripwire is not as hard as it sounds. When I first learned about them, it was totally over my head. But when I really sat down and thought about it more and tried my hand at creating one, it ended up being pretty simple!
So I’ll walk you through the exact steps it takes to make your first tripwire.
Make sure to have an existing opt-in or create one
First, before you can even CONSIDER making a tripwire offer, you need to have an opt-in freebie. Whether it’s an existing one or a new one you’re going to create — you need to have one. It might even be the most important part of this entire offer.
If your opt-in freebie isn’t valuable and isn’t catching people’s attention, they won’t subscribe and they will never see your tripwire offer… aka *crickets*
The opt-in freebie that I offer my audience is my free pin design checklist for creating clickworthy Pinterest graphics. BTW, if you’re interested in this freebie, you can check it out here!
It’s something pretty simple but extremely helpful for my audience who is interested in growing their blog traffic with Pinterest.
Once you create your freebie, make sure to promote it on all your relevant blog posts!
I use MailerLite and with MailerLite, I’m able to set the opt-in forms to redirect to a URL after the visitor enters their information.
Create an offer related to your opt-in
If you choose to create a PDF, ebook, checklist or something of that nature, I highly recommend checking out the free tool Canva to help you create it. It’s super simple to use!
Depending on what you’re creating, you can use many different tools to make your digital product like:
- Canva: for PDFs, ebooks, checklists, etc.
- YouTube & Zoom: for video tutorials
- Google Sheets: for spreadsheets and lists

Build a landing page
After you have the actual tripwire product created, you’re going to want to build a landing page that subscribers will land on once they enter their email address.
You can create landing pages for free with the Elementor plugin. You can drag and drop elements and build your pages exactly how you want them. Or you can check out the Bluchic Landing Pages templates (they’re what I use to build all of my landing pages!)
Your landing page should be short, simple, and straightforward. It should show a mockup of the product along with what buyers will get when they purchase your product. Highlight the benefits and mention both the discounted & regular price tag to show how good the deal is.
Then, add a button for them to purchase. I personally like to put at least 2-3 chances for them to click the button.
Use a timer plugin
One more thing you should be adding to your tripwire sales page is a timer. Remember we talked about adding that sense of urgency?
I usually set a 15-minute timer using the Evergreen Countdown plugin. You can do anywhere between 10-30 minutes!
Using the free plugin, after you set the timer, you can have it redirect to the sales page without the discount.
You actually have two options here. You can recreate the sales page without the discount and have it redirect to this page if the new subscriber doesn’t act. Or you can have it redirect to a page that doesn’t offer the product anymore at all.
Think of it more as an “Oops! Time’s up. You missed out.” type of page.
It’s totally up to you how you want to set up your tripwire.
Delivering your tripwires
Last but not least, once someone makes a purchase, you’ll need to deliver the product. There are a few ways to do this.
First is using a tool like SendOwl. SendOwl handles the payment as well as the delivery of the digital product. It’s super easy to set up and use but it is not a free tool.
Another option is using the plugin WooCommerce. This is a free WordPress plugin where you can set up a shop on your blog and use this to deliver your tripwires.
The catch with this method is that you do need to have a separate way to accept payments like PayPal or Stripe — then you can integrate it to capture emails of your customers to deliver the tripwire offer.
(Psst! Opt into this freebie below if you want to see an example of how you can make money with a tripwire offer!)
Tripwires are an AMAZING way to make income online passively. Once you set it up, it works on autopilot for you. It allows you to make money from a process that originally would’ve made you $0.
So in the process of growing your email list, you’re also making a profit! It’s a powerful marketing technique because later on, you’ll have the opportunity to offer an “upsell” to one of your higher-priced paid offerings like a course, coaching program, or service.
